The Eyes behind
Tomuri & Co. Floral Designs
I grew up in a very modest home. But, even so, living in Grey Lynn all my life, I couldn’t help but be influenced by the flash houses that started to grow around us, the lined magnolia and oak trees on Picton street and of course my late grandmothers concrete planters that had weeds growing up the sides with overgrown lavender and Puha spilling out the cracks of our Papakainga/Family Home. But it wasn’t until I moved to Sydney that I started translating that appreciation for natural beauty into a career. One year later, I missed home and then opened Tomuri & Co with my Sister Kareena. I have now been a florist for almost 20 years.
Flowers have this transformative power, that cannot be seen, smelt or touched. It is the inner soul of a flower that captivates the heart. This I try to communicate in the new designs I create. I am no phychologist by any means but if there is one thing I know for sure, I’ve learned that people and the nature of connections are what ensures our strength. It doesn’t matter what style planter or pot your lavender grows in, what matters is that you are caring for it.
All those things my Nanny Ma taught me.
